Embrace Technology for Communication and Connection

While it’s commonly thought that seniors aren’t the most digitally savvy, their adoption of technology is higher than ever. According to a recent Pew Research Center study, 42% of seniors now own smartphones, 32% own tablet computers and 67% of adults 65 and older are internet users. Not surprisingly, social media use is on the rise among the elderly as well, with 34% of those 65 and older using sites like Facebook.
But what if you’re one of the older Americans without access to a device or who doesn’t know how to use one? Try one of these options:
- Library programs. In many communities, the local library holds technology classes. At the Providence Public Library, for example, there free courses on everything from how to use Microsoft Word and Excel to photo editing and selling items on eBay.
- Colleges. In Rhode Island, tuition waivers are available for eligible seniors over 60 at Rhode Island College, University of Rhode Island and Community College of Rhode Island, which all offer a range of computer science classes. URI also offers the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute for adults over 50, which will include a Computer Demystification class in the fall of 2017 among its offerings.
- Senior centers. Many senior centers in the state offers regular classes on computers. The Pilgrim Senior Center in Warwick, for instance, recently launched a weekly computer class for novice to advanced users. In addition to programs, some centers even have computer labs for users, including the East Providence Senior Center.
To help our residents take advantage of the latest technology, we offer wireless internet access. It’s just one more way we’re enriching the lives of seniors at our center. Read more about our amenities.
