Brianne Giordano is a 6th year pharmacy student from the University of Rhode Island. As one of Brianne’s clinical rotations during her last year at URI, she spent six weeks at Westview Nursing Home with staff clinical pharmacist Stacey Ranucci as a preceptor. Throughout her time at Westview, Brianne worked closely with Stacey and the rest of the staff managing resident’s medications and chronic conditions. In addition to the normal pharmacy activities, Brianne completed a clinical study at Westview, researching antibiotic usage in the facility. The goal of the study was to determine how well Westview manages infections against national averages, and where there is room for improvement. At the completion of the study, Brianne and Stacey determined that Westview is very strong in infection control compared to most long term care facilities. Recently, Brianne was able to present the results of the study at the ASHP Midyear Convention, the largest convention of pharmacists nationally. After graduation in May, Brianne is pursuing a residency program that focuses on geriatrics and cardiology.
